What Is PrEP?

PrEP stands for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis. It is a medication taken by HIV-negative individuals to prevent HIV infection.

How Effective Is PrEP?

When taken as directed, PrEP is more than 99% effective at preventing HIV transmission through sexual contact. Effectiveness depends on adherence โ€” consistent daily use as prescribed is essential. It does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections.

Who Is PrEP For?

PrEP is appropriate for HIV-negative adults at higher risk of HIV exposure. This may include adults with multiple sexual partners, people whose partners are HIV-positive, or those who do not consistently use condoms. Your provider can help you assess whether PrEP is right for you.

Accessing PrEP in Canada

PrEP requires a prescription in Canada. It is available through family doctors, sexual health clinics, and HIV specialist clinics. Coverage varies: PrEP is covered under several provincial drug plans including Ontario, BC, and Quebec.

What PrEP Involves

PrEP requires a baseline HIV test before starting and follow-up HIV tests every 3 months while taking the medication. Regular kidney function tests and other health monitoring are part of standard PrEP care.
