Why Condoms Matter

Condoms are one of the most effective tools available for reducing the risk of sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancy when used correctly and consistently.

Types of Condoms Available in Canada

External condoms (commonly called male condoms) are the most widely used type. Internal condoms (commonly called female condoms) are an alternative that can be used by people of any anatomy. Both types are available at pharmacies, sexual health clinics, and community health centres.

Using Condoms Correctly

Condom effectiveness depends significantly on correct use. Common errors include: using the wrong size, opening the wrapper incorrectly, not leaving space at the tip, and using oil-based lubricants with latex condoms. Water-based lubricants are safe to use with all condom types.

Where to Get Condoms in Canada

Condoms are available at pharmacies, grocery stores, sexual health clinics, and community health centres. Many public health clinics provide condoms free of charge.

Condoms as Part of Layered Protection

Condoms work best as part of a broader approach to sexual health that may include regular STI testing, communication with partners, and in some cases additional prevention tools like PrEP.
