Syphilis information guide for Canadian adults

Why Syphilis Matters Right Now

Syphilis is a bacterial sexually transmitted infection. After decades of relative decline, rates have increased significantly in Canada, affecting people of all genders and sexual orientations.

Stages of Syphilis

Syphilis progresses through stages if untreated. Primary syphilis typically presents as a painless sore at the site of infection. Secondary syphilis may include a rash and flu-like symptoms. Latent syphilis has no symptoms but the bacteria remains active. Tertiary syphilis can cause serious damage to major organs.

Symptoms

Many people with syphilis โ€” particularly in the early stages โ€” have no symptoms or symptoms so mild they go unnoticed. This is why regular testing is important for sexually active adults.

Testing

Syphilis is diagnosed through a blood test. Testing is widely available through public health units, sexual health clinics, and family doctors. Testing for syphilis is often included in a standard full STI panel.

Treatment

Syphilis is treated with antibiotics โ€” typically penicillin. Early-stage syphilis is highly treatable. Sexual partners of anyone diagnosed should also be tested and treated. Talk to a healthcare provider for guidance specific to your situation.
