What Is Gonorrhea?

Gonorrhea is a bacterial STI caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It is the second most commonly reported bacterial STI in Canada and rates have been increasing in recent years.

Symptoms

Symptoms can include discharge from the penis, vagina, or rectum, painful urination, and sore throat if transmitted orally. Like chlamydia, many people โ€” especially those with a vagina โ€” experience no symptoms at all.

Antibiotic Resistance

One of the most significant public health concerns around gonorrhea is the development of antibiotic-resistant strains. This makes early testing and prompt treatment more important than ever. Treatment guidelines are updated regularly by Canadian health authorities.

Getting Tested

Gonorrhea is tested via urine sample or swab depending on the site of potential infection (genital, rectal, oral). Regular testing is recommended for sexually active adults, particularly those with multiple partners.

Treatment

Gonorrhea is currently treated with an antibiotic injection, often combined with an oral antibiotic. It is important to follow up after treatment to confirm the infection has cleared. Inform any recent sexual partners so they can be tested too.
